Jane Phillips | Live Out Loud

Mission Gallery, Swansea

Private View: 7pm Friday 5th August 2011
to be opened by Karen Mackinnon, Exhibitions Curator, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery

Mission Gallery is delighted to present the exhibition Live Out Loud by Jane Phillips.

Colour is big news this season; the fashion world is in love with stripe, print and bold colour blocking. Amongst the colour the catwalks are all featuring a revival of the 70's; it's fitting therefore that Mission Gallery are presenting this exhibition of colour drenched paintings, celebrating the creativity, life and achievements of Jane Phillips (1957 - 2011) Mission Gallery's first director.

Jane Phillips studied BA Hons Fine Art (Painting) during 1977 - 1979 at Central School of Art & Design, London. The paintings are vivacious, with the energy of colour driving the paintings to be a feast for the eyes.

In addition to large scale works the exhibition will feature evidence of obsessive drawing studies that essentially dominated the work, including; drawing studies of the coast and trees, fanatical colour studies, geometric patterns and mark making.

Sadly, Jane Phillips passed away on 6th February 2011 after a long illness. Jane Phillips dedicated her life and career to Mission Gallery, entering the realm of exhibition organisation in 1980 and developing to be one of the most dynamic people working in the visual arts and crafts in Wales. It is with thanks to Jane Phillips that Mission Gallery developed the ethos for supporting young and/or emerging artists; taking risks and giving them opportunities and challenges.

There were not many that knew of Jane's background as an artist and this fascinating insight into Jane's working process reflects her creative ethos both as artist and director. Her support and encouragement for young artists grew from her own ambition and passion. Following a very productive period in the early eighties which saw Jane's work being purchased for the Glynn Vivian collection, plus involvement with an exchange in Mannheim with fellow AADW artists, Jane dedicated her life to developing Mission Gallery.

This exhibition gives an insight into the passion behind the artist who developed it in to the successful contemporary visual art and craft space it is today.

Exhibition continues until: 29th August 2011
